PARTICULAR CHARACTERISTICS OF PROGRAM: Robeson’s life, of course, presents important and still controversial material about America’s recent social history. This program demonstrates the effectiveness of a single skilled actor working with a good script in communicating this material on an emotional as well as intellectual level. |

PARTICULAR CHARACTERISTICS OF PROGRAM: “SEABROOK 1977” has very strong qualities in both your categories –“risk taking” and “catalytic potential”.As co-director/producer, my main goal in making this documentary was to inspire viewers to take action (stop being passive) and become involved in community groups working for grassroots social change. We are taught in school (and television reinforces this message) that it is only “great leaders” who make history. “SEABROOK 1977” is a portrait of people empowering themselves from the grassroots. American citizens taking direct action –putting their bodies on the line- to stop something they deeply feel endangered by. This is a theme you don’t normally see depicted on television in either a positive or in-depth manner. With a lot of cynicism in the air to the tune of “you can’t fight city hall”, it is my hope that “SEABROOK 1977” will expand people’s perception of what is real or possible in what ever community issue people struggle over, be it nuclear plants or decent working conditions at one’s job. PARTICULAR CHARACTERISTICS OF PROGRAM:There is something about our pasts which intrigues us all. We are forever “looking backwards”, looking “homeward”, trying to recall “the way we were”. Biography, auto –and otherwise. Is a perennial favorite; nostalgia is another. And this is not always an idle interest; there is something basic in our fascination with our pasts, something beneficial both historically and humanly.RETURN TO BITUMEN is a small multiple-autobiography of a small, largely forgotten place and time. It is of slight historical importance; it is most important as an example of and an endorsement for a process –the process of gathering, of returning, of exchanging and renewing old information and ties and precepts and priorities. It is a film about preservation; it seeks to validate the best aspects of nostalgia, to remind us –and those we reminisce with and to- that what we were, however imperfectly recalled, is a large part of what we are... and will be. |

Canada
PARTICULAR CHARACTERISTICS OF PROGRAM: The program was very much an experiment in feed-back television. In earlier days, CBC Radio had pioneered Citizens Forum and Farm Radio Forum in close co-operation with citizen and farm groups but this had never been effective in television terms. With the advent of Canadian domestic satellites which the CBC has used for a number of years to distribute its network programming across five time zones, there was a desire on the part of some of our program people to use the satellite facilities and improved telephone circuitry to experiment in the use of television for grass roots participation by Canadians in many occupations and levels of society. The satellite channels were used to link the Edmonton audience and studio groups across the country while the general audience was encouraged to telephone through toll free circuits from any part of the country to a large group of volunteers who answered the phone calls and accepted and probed the comments of those who were talking. All telephone conversations were recorded on tape and throughout the live program, summaries of the telephone reactions were added to the broadcast. The Canadian Association for Adult Education were co-sponsors of this program project which indeed arose out of the interest which the Canadian Association for Adult Education had in restoring the close relationship which formerly existed with the national broadcasting organization (CBC).The Canadian Association for Adult Education saw one of its objectives as that of “creating a Canada-wide learning environment to examine the nature of the political and economic and social problems facing the country”. Their interest was in using the CBC programming as the catalyst for group discussions on a large scale throughout the country (the old citizen’s forum technique). Their educational objectives did not conflict with the CBC program objectives, one of which was to explore a general viewing audience to shake off the normally passive role of TV viewer to become involved in some form of open debate and talk back... debate among themselves, talk back to the politicians, the media, to the power structure of the country. The outcome in terms of the CBC program objectives was judged to be more successful than we had hoped and a further experiment is under discussion. While the Canadian Association for Adult Education was disappointed in some aspects of its objectives, the organization also wants to continue the experiments. |

PARTICULAR CHARACTERISTICS OF PROGRAM: SITCOM is a rare and intimate look at the inner workings of high-stake commercial television, through the eyes of one of its foremost practitioners. The cutting is rapid-fire, like commercial TV itself, and the shooting is verite-style. The program is designed to be as entertaining as frothy TV itself, but with content that will affect the viewer’s understanding and attitudes towards network TV. The results tend to confirm pre-existing opinions about the genre of situation comedy, and these programs studied. |
