Japanese television NHK’s response to the polarization between American and Arab society following the events of September 11th. The programme is based on a live satellite link between a group of young Americans in New York City and a group of young Arabs in Cairo. We see that there is no singular “American” or “Arab” position. This successful adaptation of the vis-à-vis approach reminds us that the television medium can be an effective tool for building bridges of understanding between cultures.
