Much has been written about the impact—real and imagined—of the new technology in television. The explosion of video equipment throughout the world—from the lightweight electronic cameras to the extraordinary complex of post-production facilities—has been variously seen as sounding the death knell of film, heralding a new age of visual imagery of providing the means of cheaper and more democratic programme making. These seven programmes reveal considerable diversity of style and a variety of different approaches towards the creation of electronic imagery. Each in its own way illustrates an aspect of what has become a continuing debate—“What are the implications of the Video Revolution?” Where do we stand now? Technology versus money? Tape versus life performance? Studio versus outside production? And perhaps most important of all, is high technologies set to replace thought and imagination?
