Two directors reflect and react to immediate reality in provocative filmed dramas which examine critical situations in their respective societies. With different approaches, both mark a return to “realism” in television fiction. Both are firmly rooted in social reality and very far from the conventional escapist fiction dominating television today. The language of the documentary enriches the drama and blurs the line between reality and fiction. Clarke throws us into that space brutally, Klier more tenderly. But both approaches should disturb us.
