Session Focus: Choosing that right point of view for telling a story The point of view is an essential part of good storytelling. What is the most relevant, ideal and effective way to tell my story and through whose eyes? Any author will ask her- or himself that very question at the very start of any writing project. It is mandatory to have the right character at the centre of the storytelling in order to get the right feel, the right emotions, the right perspective. Depending on the choices an author makes, it can completely shift a storyline, plot structure and its outcome. From paper to the screen, the director must also think of the best way to shoot in order to find the right angle and the most efficient way to tell the story. This session will present dramas that manage to successfully use the ideal points of view to tell stories about life-changing events. One seeing cancer through the eyes of a Dutch patient, the other, a Canadian mother’s heartfelt efforts to help her suicidal teenage daughter surmount life’s challenges.
