In some countries emotionally explosive subjects have to be dealt with through “codes” which circumvent the more direct language of the news broadcast. Fiction and drama can thus provide a vehicle where the producer may convey a message in ways that are not acceptable to societies which have deeply rooted fears. Two Israeli films approach thorny subjects in raw, low-budget dramas which, nevertheless, move us and have significance beyond the story they set out to tell.
