WILLIE STARK is a modern political opera, set in a state capital in the Deep South of the United States in 1935. It is the story of a flamboyant and powerful populist governor facing impeachment. The operatic technique blends spoken and sung dialogue into the score, including the radio voice of commentator Lowell Thomas. The music weaves popular, folk and jazz elements into its texture. The television technique is a blend of stage relay, extensive isolated recording, and elaborate editing for purposes of dramatic impact. The Swiss BURLESQUE is a dramatization of the time period immediately preceding the start of a symphony concert, using the musicians as actors. The “plot” of the piano concerto is carefully choreographed to the musical composition in an unusual and highly original way. MEDEA is a performance of the ancient Greek tragedy that crosses the boundaries of time, cultures and nationalities. A powerful cast is headed by Zoe Caldwell and Dame Judith Anderson. The television presentation of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Production is a striking example of the use of the medium in a tasteful and effective way.
