Session Focus: Innovative approaches to portraits Why are we driven to tell stories of past heroes? Often it’s because they continue to have meaning in our lives. With the benefit of time we can better understand what sets them apart. In this session we see two cultural icons through a modern lens. The first documentary mixes a cinematic approach, archive material and current footage to add depth to a portrait of a sports hero, Ultiminio Ramos. The result is like a beautiful painting. In the second, James Baldwin’s uncompleted text is combined with recent news material and it is sadly still relevant.
