Many television documentaries attempt to reconstruct history. But successful television is rooted in the specific and the personal history in the broad sweep of population and events. Do documentary reconstructions really do justice to history? Or do they merely make us “feel” we know the story when all we have seen is moody sequences, a few “facts” and lots of talking heads?
