Any deviation from “normality2 has been considered Taboo for years and kept off the screen. However more and more programmes are dealing with these “taboos”—pornography, homosexuality, double-personality, handicaps and transvestism. These programmes often raise disturbing questions on ethics and image making. TV can disturb—for good and for bad… Should public TV destroy those taboos, is this a legitimate and genuine challenge for change or is TV becoming a voyeuristic instrument? In this session we examine approaches to topics not often seen on television. They are portraits of transvestism, a documentary on fulfilling the dreams of the handicapped, and an historical documentary of homosexuality in the U.S.
