Described as “Politics meets Pop Idol,” Vote For Me sees viewers voting for aspiring politicians who go through a series of televised challenges designed to test their abilities as politicians, and then get grilled by a panel of expert judges. Viewers vote for the candidate they feel is best suited to become a politician; whittling down the shortlist each night until the grand final, when the winning candidate is announced. The winner stands as an independent candidate in the next election. In the U.K., Vote for Me premiered on ITV 1 in January 2004 and quickly became one of the most high profile factual programs on air, generating enormous amounts of media coverage. The winning candidate has declared his intention to stand against the leader of Britain’s official opposition party. Vote for Me has also aired in Australia, where it generated huge media coverage and gained a high profile for the broadcaster.
