Rebelles tells the stories of Canadian women who helped shape the country’s history by standing up against inequality, and exclusion. Aimed at young audiences, the series situates each woman within the social, political, and cultural context of her time, revealing how personal acts of courage can spark collective change. In an era marked by social tension and uncertainty, Rebelles seeks to rekindle the spirit of civic engagement that exists in all of us. Visually, the series adopts a collage-style animation, a subtle nod to the Victorian-era women who pioneered the art form. This aesthetic choice requires an extensive volume of visual assets. However, many of the women featured in Rebelles were poorly documented visually due to their era or socio-économic class. To address this gap, the production team integrated artificial intelligence as a creative tool. Carefully guided by archival references, the vast majority of the images in the series were generated using AI. Rather than replacing human creativity, AI became a means of restoring visibility, enabling these overlooked figures to exist visually and engage contemporary audiences in a renewed dialogue with history.
