“Ujeli” is a rare example of television as an agent for change. In Nepal where most of the people are illiterate and live in rural areas traditions live strong. Some of the traditions kill. “Ujeli” is a story of a 10-year-old village girl, whose fate is completely determined by strong tradition. Instead of being able to enjoy her childhood and finishing the school, she is married off to a boy from another village, where she starts the life of a daughter-in-law at a very early age. The story of Ujeli is not at all exceptional in Nepal, but child marriage is not normally discussed, simply because it is against the law, yet a widespread practise. The consequences of this traditional are visible in high mortality, maternal mortality, women´s illiteracy etc. “Ujeli” started as a documentary project, but during the research it became obvious that in rural Nepal it was impossible to find people who would acknowledge the practise of child marriage on record. Therefore drama-documentary was a feasible solution. The actors are all villagers, most of them have never seen television because the signal does not reach their villages; besides there is no electricity. Very few from these villages have seen a movie. That is why they act like they live.
