In 1910, the liberal government in London let South Africa free without caring about the future of the black majority although there were warnings enough. There were – 71 years ago – quite a lot of well –to-do black peasants in the country. By 1913, already, the new government started expropriating the black peasantry. In the film, 84-year-old former peasant Blanche and her 70-year-old niece Ellen tell us the story of their being at home in a country where they are not allowed to be at home.Through meeting rather nice bourgeois people – like the majority in your part of the world – TSIAMELO – A PLACE OF GOODNESS makes us understand from a different angle a very special situation in that part of our world. Without the classic political – oriented approach or the dramatic form, the program lets us discover a terrible phenomenon: ordinary people in an extraordinary milieu.
