When Paul, an innocent young man from the valleys, writes a moving and accurate film about the miner’s strike, Goldie, a bulky Hollywood mogul immediately recognizes a marvelous, human interest story. Goldie has some big stars in mind for the central roles of Arthur Scargill and his wife – Al Pacino and Meryl Streep. So Paul’s script undergoes some changes... The script is changed from an indictment on the Tory government to a vehicle for Meryl and Al’s method acting talents. Of course the final Oscar winning version has little to do with the miners’ strike and a lot to do with star egos. Embittered and disillusioned about the film business, Paul calls it a day and goes home only to be confronted with bitterness and enmity from his form friends who feel let down. “The strike” was the winner of the Golden Rose of Montreux 1988 for Comedy.
