“Echo”, a monthly economic magazine, came into being two years ago with the aim of inspiring a broader public interest in economic mechanisms. Accordingly, the approach is resolutely televisual, combining short reports, a sustained rhythm, a systematic use of imagery, with simple, direct explanations and a touch of humor. The aim was to create and original information magazine with a different approach. Judging by public reaction, including that of the business community, this objective has been attained. The programme presented here was broadcast on mach 20, 1988. There are growing complaints that Swiss management lacks imagination and courage, is resistant to change and reluctant to face up to foreign managerial know-how. Many leading Swiss corporate managers have an engineering background. They are able to build very sophisticated equipment, but they don’t know how to sell it. Besides, all too many companies are still managed along the lines of the army: too many bosses, poor communication and, above all, a pervasive respect for hierarchical structures. But Swiss corporations are adjusting. More and more training courses are available and the selection process for new managers is increasingly demanding. And even in Switzerland a new type of manager is emerging; one who provides encouragement rather than issuing orders and who prefers creativity to discipline.
