The monologue is authentic, but the whole setting is totally fictitious: we are a television team visiting the ageing Diva Joan Crawford in her home somewhere between Hollywood and Central Park. We spend an afternoon and an evening with the woman whose will and personal strength keep her from falling apart. It’s a strange mixture form on-camera-statements as we know them and all these moments which usually you only find on the floor of the cutting room. An exercise about media, an exercise in voyeurism and complete loneliness. There is some booze to help you along, some memories disturbing, some memories cherishing. It is a performance in many aspects – a way of telling a story about stars (and dreams) without using the keyhole. Our keyhole is the medium. THE CONFESSIONS OF JOAN C. (Besuch bei Joan – At home with Joan) is based on an Evening’s performance of the famed Werkteater, Amsterdam. The actor Cas Enklaar developed the play all by himself. He is the character Joan Crawford –not a female impersonator but an actor displaying the methods of acting, even in “Private Life”. Horst Königsten (The Axe of Wandbek, You are my mother, Haus Vaterland) wrote the script and directed the film – in a lavish studio set which makes studio work and restriction an item at the same time.
