'Video Diaries' is a programme that gives small portable cameras to members of the public to record their everyday lives. We then help the diarist to edit their Diary. At all times they have full editorial control of the final programme. We teach them to use the camera and give advice on how and what to shoot. A Radio 4 journalist had interviewed Dr Ylli Hasani for a programme and telephoned us to say he might make an interesting Diary. I was sent to Albania to meet him to see if he would be good and see if he would be interested in making it. Ylli is a rural GP earning a mere $10 (US) a month. Albania is a country coming out of 45 years of isolation under President Hoxha´s socialist regime. The country was in a state of anarchy. While filming his Diary first his surgery was destroyed by vandals then his medical bag was stolen. He tries desperately to go to Italy to work. He learnt his excellent English from listening to the prohibited BBC World Service in secret. At the end of filming he leaves Albania for the first time to edit his programme here in London.
