In the beginning of the twentieth century, in 1909, a neighbourhood called !Ahuzat Bayit' was established. In time, the neighbourhood would become a new city, Tel Aviv, developing alongside one of the most ancient cities in the world – Jaffa. Later, the two cities were united and became Israel's economic and cultural capital. The vision of the founding fathers was to improve the dismal quality of life in Jaffa, and to endorse the Western European model of a !garden city' – one story houses, surrounded by gardens with fruit trees, with slanted roofs and with simple and symmetrical windows and doors.
