This is an imaginative, prime-time program which conquers the problems of using television to provide information and to influence an audience. It’s brief was to encourage safe sex practices within the target audience aged between 16 and 24 years. While most of young people these days are aware of the dangers of AIDS and, less so, STDs, their sexual support behavior doesn’t reflect this. We wanted to promote peer support for them to act with greater responsibility and caring towards themselves and their partners. The program’s theme, thus, was “communication leads to safer sex”. Utilizing the “gene2 of the “documentary, we cast our lead actor as a probing current affairs reporter investigating sex. The reporter asked questions of young actor in real-life situations designed to reveal information, and highlight the inconsistencies of some commonly held beliefs. He pinpointed the absurdities of some attitudes that were instantly recognizable to our audience. So, in a humorous but reasonably obvious way we got the safe sex message across without lecturing, preaching or talking down to our viewers.
