RESERVATIONS was a play commissioned for television from a n emerging young writer who, having previously written for the theatre, came to television concerned lest limitations might be imposed on content and language. The play is a frank and honest statement about sexual attitudes of teenagers in Britain today – a subject that, if dealt with at all in drama, rarely carries the voice of authenticity. More importantly the play urges the demolition of stereotyped, inherited, cultural attitudes that often characterize role playing within sexual relationships. It achieves its aims with both humor and insight. The London “Daily Telegraph” urged BBC to prevent transmission of the play and accused the Corporation of entering the “soft-porn” video market which is perhaps more a measure of the all pervading lack of honesty in most dramatic representations of sexual relationships and uncertainties. Elsewhere it achieved recognition as a play that successfully challenged fundamental assumptions.
