In the battle for the voters’ voices in the European elections 2024, all sorts of claims were made. But what is true of all these claims? During the 10-day Factcheck Marathon in Brussels, 7 editorial teams from the Netherlands (KRO-NCRV’s Pointer, AD) and Belgium (VRT, RTWF, Knack, deCheckers & factcheck Vlaanderen) joined forces to find out. They were not only guided by political parties but also looked at influencers, and focussed on the most important election themes: migration, climate, environment, and EU institutions. Pointer shared the results by Factcheck broadcasts, daily on NPO1, NPO2, and NPO Start. Journalists explain the research illustrated with clips from the original claim. Viewers learn whether the claim is true or not, and how we come to that conclusion. Shortened versions were also shared on Pointer’s social media channels. On pointer.nl/ verkiezingen, all factchecks were available, even when a remarkable claim turned out to be true. In an Online Quiz you could test if you can spot misinformation. Every day, Pointer added new questions and advice on recognising techniques associated with misinformation. In short online videos, an anchor proactively debunked misinformation on the YouTube channel of NPO Radio 1 and the TikTok account of NPO3.
