When the creators of Oh my goig! (OMG) were giventhe go ahead for the production of its fifth season (S5)in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, they saw it asan opportunity. OMG targets youngsters and this wasthe perfect time to focus on the consequences thevirus brought to their lives. Since its breakout, youngpeople have often been in the spotlight or sometimesdirectly punished or blamed for supposedly irresponsibleconduct during the worst waves of the pandemic. OMGS5 highlights young people’s new ways of socialising andthe new sexual and affective relationships the pandemichas brought. In a time of restrictions, precarious jobsand increasing mental health issues, society adapts andso do OMG’s characters, who become more resilient andlearn about caring and affection. OMG S5 starts with thedeclaration of the ‘state of alarm’ in Spain (March 2020),goes on with the long confinement, and ends up withthe new post-Covid reality. Depression, anxiety, forcedlockdowns with family members, the spike of video callsand job insecurity, dating with masks on, racism towardsthe Chinese community, the loss of loved ones, … Allthese interwine with infidelity, fatphobia, sex work,LGBTI+ people getting back into the closet, and othersex-affective issues which have been OMG’s pivotal themesince it began airing in 2016 as a sexual education format.
