The serial documentary format showcases ten incredible children with some kind of baggage, carrying a personal story that nobody sees: their unseen story. The children allow us to get a front-row seat in their lives. Animation is used as a way to visualise parts of their story we can not show through images, it makes it easier for the viewer to understand what happened and the kind of animation can soften what is being told. The children always tell what happened in their own words. From parents with unconventional jobs, being a refugee, living in foster care, to a girl with deaf and hard of hearing parents. Or the story of two sisters who live with their parents’ best friends because their parents passed away within a very short time of each other. As a public service broadcaster we have the ambition to tell local but universal stories, stories that children can relate to and that help them find their own place in the world. Every kid is special, every kid has its own story that needs to be told. This series was picked up by a lot of other media-outlets, all Flemish newspapers and tv-news talked about the programme. Because of the importance of seeing these stories and themes through the eyes of our children, VRT1, the main channel for grown-ups, started airing My Unseen Story as well.
