The role of art in America has been debated recently every where from the halls of Congress to the local shopping mall. “Golub” is more than a portrait of the socially committed painter Leon Golub, whose massive canvasses are intended to provoke viewers. It is about media and contemporary society, social responsibility and creativity, art and information. The broadcast was scheduled to tie in to the arts censorship controversy, and many TV critics seized the opportunity to praise the film and discuss their own – often strongly felt – views. Several prominent art critics also “crossed over” to write about “Golub”. It was among our most successful issue-driven press responses ever.
