A film about the German myth of Africa and the German military policy towards Africa from 1940 to 1993. Five hundred segments taken from feature films, documentaries, cartoons, commercials, music videos and computer games present the German image of Africa from the World War II to today. Many of the clips from West and East German archives have never been shown before. In addition to the visual material, war veterans, legionnaires and officers talk about their dreams of Africa. The result is a tightly-woven and fast-paced filmic collage that narrates the history of Africa in the German imagination, and Germany´s political and military role in African affairs. The film thus documents the complex relationship between politics and popular myths. There are no comments or voice-overs on the segments from the films and interviews, nor are there insertions of names or movie titles. In order to get his questions answered, the viewer has to find out about the similarities and contradictions of material presented in the film, both by watching and listening to the clips and interviews and by recalling his or her own personal memories of movies, books, and television about Africa and Africans. Through the juxtaposition of clips from existing films and games picturing Africa, “Free Africa!” represents the actual history of Germany´s relations to Africa are indissociable from popular images. The collage created out of images of the mythic Africa and its toy-sized equivalent enacts a children´s game of discovery, conquest and liberation of Africa.
