Ex-romance premiered on the series NEW TELEVISION in Boston and New York in June 1987. The program is a visual scrapbook of dance conceived, directed and edited by Charles Atlas. It is a fictional documentary of a dance company on tour in Rhode Island. Atlas captures the comraderie and complexity of the relationship among the members of the company in rehearsal, in performance, in their lives and in between. The film was shot in a variety of places, including an airport terminal, a rehearsal studio, on the wing of an airplane, a gas station, a ballroom, a night club, an a park. The music chosen, arranged or composed by Jeffrey Lohn, ranges from classical to rock to country. The end product is a beautiful and fun montage which us a tribute to dance and dancers. The dance sequences were provided by the choreographer, Karole Armitage. The central cast members were the six dancers/performers: Ms. Armitage, Michael Clarke, Susan Blankesop, Jean-Marie Didier, Brenda McPherson, Luis Viana ( an International cast). Framing and interspersed in the program is a humorous commentary which satirizes the standard Workshop, the program was partially funded by the Massachusetts council on the Arts and Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts, Channel Four Ltd.,and NEW TELEVISION (WGBH/WNET).
