The dollars extract on this tape consists of thirteen three minute episodes of a satirical drama serial produced as apart of the weekly cultural magazine programme “Gayelle”. This serial featured the presenters of “Gayelle” in the major roles. Episodes, based on newspapers stories and popular knowledge, were written each week immediately prior to videotaping. Dollars used no set and was designed in self-contained episodes which nevertheless contributed to the continuing overall story line which was improvised from week to week. Dollars followed actual events so closely that Banyan was finally instructed by the television station to disc0ontinue the series. By tat time it had become so popular that the theme tune was sung by popular dance bands and was especially popular among school children as is evidenced by the episode constructed by the group of school girls. Due to many requests for Dollars to continue, the producers, with the active connivance of calypso monarch David Rudder, devised a competition to solicit lyrics for the Dollars theme to have the social and political comment reappear in anther (more direct) form.
