Complaints of A Dutiful Daughter
This Academy Award nominated film takes a moving personal story, illuminates it with insight and humor, and makes it universal. In recounting her attempts to come to terms with her mother advancing Alzheimer´s disease, Deborah Hoffman explores the relationship between mother and daughter, parent and child, and the tenacity of love. Part of P.O.V.´s 'High Impact Television' initiative to maximize the impact of national broadcasts, the film won unanimous praise because its fresh approach to a generally depressing subject. Customized campaigns with national associations, community groups and public television stations yielded a wealth of press coverage including U.S. News and World Report, Dateline NBC, NPR / All Things Considered, Los Angeles Times and ABC News. This program was selected to launch P.O.V.´s 1995 summer season. In addition, it was amplified by an aggressive 'High Impact Television' campaign in which major national health and senior organizations partnered with P.O.V. to create 20 regional tie-in activities. For example, affiliate groups in some cities held press conferences prior to the broadcast to raise awareness of local resources available to family caregivers. Others worked with their local public television stations to create companion programming, which included referral information for local services. Online, services ranging from SeniorNet to the National Institute of Health linked up with P.O.V.´s Website to provide cyber-support groups, information on Alzheimer´s Disease and resources to users. Few P.O.V. programs have generated the personal, heartfelt responses that 'Complaints' enjoyed. Letters, e-mails, and requests for cassettes poured in from caregivers, senior citizens, medical professionals, and adult children; all touched by the broadcast. 'You´ve given me a entirely new way to communicate with my ailing father,' was a typical response. The most compelling feedback was edited into 'Talking Back: Video Letters to P.O.V.', a viewer response segment which aired a few weeks later.
