Shadow puppets - Indian myths and legends
00:18:43
1980
Canada
WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROGRAM FOR INPUT: This is an experimental form, using a new technique to adapt shadow puppets to television. The figures were manipulated from behind a clear plexiglass screen, using clear, thin plexiglass rods. Since the rods are not visible, the effect is often like animation rather than puppetry. Script material was chosen from the legends of the Cree and Blackfoot nations because these people form the largest segments of the native population within Alberta, and because these myths and legends are not well-known out side the native communities. The shadow puppet programs may be used in language arts, social studies, art and for general audience viewing. |

WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROGRAM FOR INPUT: 'Getting away from Sidney' was one of the first films broadcast on British television to mark the International Year of the Disabled. It is a positive and defiant expression of the participants themselves - a company of disabled actors. The form and content of the programme is taken directly from their concerns and observations. They tell their stories in their own words and trough their own play 'Sideshow'. So far as is possible in television the programme makers did not mediate between the subjects of the programme and the audience. For this particular section of society this a rare occurence. |

WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROGRAM FOR INPUT: This program is part of a continuing series called Seven Dirty Words, the purpose of which is to air biased, one- sided, controversial, dissenting views . It fills a need and fulfills a requeriment that television stations in the United States air the views of all voices. It is significant that there is no other television series of its kind in the North American continent. It is also significant that it is a very popular series in our state and is applauded by viewers representing any and all socio-economic groups, ideologies, and values. |

WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROGRAM FOR INPUT: Levene comments on the situation dramatized in 'Final Edition': ' In the past year and half at least three major Canadian daily newspapers have folded. In both Canada and the U.S there are fewer and fewer newspapers, less and less competition. This is a highly topical story that I felt should be told. ' A recent enquiry into the public responsibilities of the few large private organizations who control newspaper publiching in Canada resulted in sharp controversy. The issue is larger than publishing and Canada. The objective style of the drama invites your comment. |

WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROGRAM FOR INPUT: Wife-beating is often called the silent crime. Producer Anne Frank says: 'The statistic that one in ten women is being battered means that it´s happening much more frequently than we hear. If this film can do anything, it would be to help open up a subject that we´re so reluctant to recognize and discuss. It´s time that we , as a society, faced up to this particular problem and moved towards a solution.' |

WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROGRAM FOR INPUT: In terms of audience fragmentation, competition and the promotion of foreign commercial values, the Canadian present may be everyone´s future in broadcasting. The journal is a successful example of Public Broadcaster fighting back, reclaiming a National audience both for responsible journalism, and a pro Canadian view of events. The arena is 'prime time' , and the other competitors are all of the US and Canadian Comerical Networks supplying quantities of persuasive and popular entertainment programming to all Canadian centres via cable. |

WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROGRAM FOR INPUT: Beside being all of the above and more, The film is especially interesting in the way Blank, by focusing on the stange subject of Garlic, brings togetherpeople and cultures one would never expect to see in juxtaposition. It gives us insight into obsession. It is informative and entertaining and gives us food for thought about people-- are people really as different as they sometimes seem? |
