“The Journal” is perhaps the most significant event in Canadian Broadcasting in recent years. Immediately following a redesigned national news program moved back to 10 pm from the traditional Canadian News time slot at 11, The Journal offers a fast-paced half hour review of current affairs five days a week. The program includes mini-documentaries, live interviews by satellite, “double-under” interviews, and specialist reports on arts and science, fed by more than a dozen ENG crews travelling the world. In terms of audience fragmentation, competition and the promotion of foreign commercial values, the Canadian present may be everyone’s future in broadcasting. The Journal is a successful example of a Public Broadcaster fighting back, reclaiming a National audience both for responsible journalism, and a pro-Canadian view of events. The arena is “prime time”, and the other competitors are all of the U.S. and Canadian Commercial Networks supplying quantities of persuasive and popular entertainment programming to all Canadian centres via cable.
