On July 4th, 1946, one year after the war in which millions of deportees perished, the population of Kielce (100 km south of Warsaw), in a feverish wawe of anti-semitic hatred, massacred dozens of Jewish survivors of the Nazi camps. Result: 42 dead and 67 gravely wounded. The Kielce massacre deeply shocked the world. The Polish, victims of the war, were now seen as murderers of Jews who had survived the holocaust. “Witnesses” is a 26 minute documentary, secretly filmed in the very places where the massacre took place, made up of testimony by Poles who witnessed the day of horror, an “forgotten” episode in Polish history.
