Under the pseudonym ‘Jule Stinkesocke’, the blogger of the same name has been reporting on her experiences and challenges as a young woman in a wheelchair for years. With her Twitter account and blog, she now has more than 70,000 followers, collects donations and is recognised by many organisations for her honest approach to her disability. Then, in April 2023, came the shock: All her accounts disappeared and she was accused of never having existed and of deceiving her community by posing as catfish, i.e. with a fake identity. Based on this case, the documentary series takes an in-depth look at the topic of catfishing and the resulting consequences, particularly with regard to marginalised groups, and comes across countless cases. What connects all these cases? And how can we as social media users recognise which people or profiles are authentic in the age of AI? The four episodes deal with different questions and focal points, such as the role of marginalised groups in the context of fake identities. Episode 1: the perfect illusion.
