“Video Nation Shorts” are produced by the Community Programmes Unit of the BBC. They are the best known product of the unique Video Nation project whereby 50 diverse people from across Britain are given a camcorder and training by the BBC and record aspects of everyday life during the course of a year. Contributors to the project have a right of veto over their material so that they see and approve programs before transmission. Since spring 1994, the “Shorts” have been broadcast weeknights before BBC´s flagship current affairs magazine program “Newsnight.” Over 800 have been broadcast to date, reflecting a broad range of lifestyles and issues. Video Nation has also on occasion taken its working method abroad and produced seasons of topical “Shorts” recorded with people in Africa, Hong Kong, the Caribbean and Bangladesh.
