Among the many TV productions bearing Adrian Marthaler´s unmistakable imprint, there is now one even more outstanding than all the others: his TV adaptation of Tschaikovsky piano concert in B minor, played by the Radio- Sinfonieorchester Basle under the direction of Matthias Bamert and with Ilana Vered on the piano. Daring though some of his earlier interpretations may have been, never before had he approached a musical bestseller (which for so many has become an object of veneration) with such wicked boldness, - and never before has he been so straight forward. Tschaikovsky´s antagonist are probably going to say that this is the composer´s fault anyway, but his admirerswill be shocked and outranged. It must be admitted -and appreciated- that Marthaler Killed two birds, two fetishes, with one stone: the hullabaloo which nowadays surrounds all solo concerts, as well as the elusive perfection with which such events are usually boiled up for TV.
