Selective memory, history’s legacy and the political geography of the south are all brought to the fore in this thoughtful work about racism in the small Kentucky town of Corbin. The town was the site of a 1919 race riot in which its entire Black population was “deported”, leaving to this day an all-white community. Beautifully shot and scored, and filled with the unmediated and disturbing statements of today’s Corbin residents, “Trouble behind” evokes a world at once different from and painfully similar to that of any other part of the United States today.
