China and Taiwan: squared off astride the Taiwan Strait. The Guomindang soldiers who crossed over to Taiwan lost all contact with their wives and children. But a policy shift by the Chinese and Taiwanese governments in 1987 made it possible for people to seek out long-lost kith and kin. Dong Wanhua (70) and his former wife Shao Yuhua (68) are re-united in Shanghai after a 45-year separation. But in the meantime, Shao Yuhua has married Zhan Yanshen (86) and had two daughters by him. The long-awaited reunion is beset by difficulties, not least Shao Yuhua´s divorce from Zhan Yanshen and the long antagonism between the two countries. We chronicle 3 years in the lives of the two former love-birds and show how the history and hostility between China and Taiwan has affected estranged families.
