Tinpis (in pidgin “tined mackerel”) is a national dish that is savored when recovering a pile of steeming rice. By extension, it’s also the usual name of the collective brush taxi. Following a car accident, Papa, taxi driver, becomes the owner of his taxi thanks to the insurance settlement. Tribal notable of High Plains, he belongs to the generation who had the first contact with the outside world. During the accident, he was rescued by Nacki, young papoua coming from the city. As a reward, Papa promises him his daughter’s hand and offers him to assist him while driving on the road. But Johanne and Nacki refuse that Papa decides for their own happiness, nevertheless falling in love. Here is the strange couple, so characteristic of Papoua New Guinea today, drawn into a wild goose-chase, the elder attached to his traditions, the younger, touched by values of modern world. Through this burlesque chases, Pengau Nengo takes us over to an uncommon country, satirically dialing with a complex social reality.
