“The wedding waltz” is a new programme written and directed by Matti Ijäs, maker of the famous film “The Wrestler” which was seen in Input’ 87 in Granada. In his new film Matti Ijäs again describes the strange ways of the Finnish way of life. There are three young men driving around the Northern Finland in a car which is waiting for inspection. The surrealistic and grotesque elements are again strongly present as always in the works of Matti Ijäs. Is this story a tragedy, a comedy or just a surrealistic fairy-tale or is it pure Finnish country realism? It depends on what kind of taste the public has. As well now as always before, Matti Ijäs’ new film has awoken strong emotions among the Finnish viewers. The co-writer of the film is Joni Skiftesvik, a talented Finnish short story writer. The vision of the world seen by Ijäs and Skiftesvik may be grotesque and odd but it’s always funny in its very realistic way.
