Tchaikovsky said that he lad projected his life, his anxieties and his tragedy into his 6th Symphony, which he composed a few months before his death. And it was all this that producer Jean-Yves Landry tried to rediscover and reinvent in this very personal view of the great Russian composer’s universe. La Pathétique shows us Tchaikovsky wrestling with his inner demons and hallucinations, surrounded by the people who left their mark in his life. This symphony performed by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kiril Kondrashin, serves as a backdrop to the drama that evolves on the screen. The flamboyant visual treatment in a surrealist mode expresses powerfully and sensitively the world-weariness of a man puts in his music all that he has to suppress from his life. This program has the rare quality of achieving a symbiosis of music, theatre and ballet. It is a delight to see and hear.
