'The Green Fields of France' is a onehour documentary to commemorate the Irish who died in World War I, and to mark the 8Oth annyversary of the ending of the war in November 1918. The film is an impressionistic requiem for the Irish dead, composed of a complex creative montage of contemporary Super 8mm, written accounts of the war in voice-over, extracts from Irish poets involved in the war, including Thomas Kettle, Francis Ledwidge and Patrick MacGill, and extensive photographic and filmic archive and music. While the film is clearly not intended to be a linear historical documentary, the narrative structure of the film follows the essential storyline of the Irish involvement in the war.
