The Enchanted way relieves chilhood from the point of view of a lovable five year-old, Riki, who has an excepcionally vivid imagination. Fairies and illusions of Riki’s daydreams are closely intermingled with the events of real life. With its unique insight into a child’s life and psichology, and various overlapping levels of realism and fantasy, this television drama represents a new genre in Finnish film. The Enchanted way illustrates a bygone springtime and sumer in 1917 in Finnish Karelia. The scene of the play is a picturesque village few miles north of town of Vyborg. The cosmopolitan atmosphere—a delightful mixture of Finnish, Russian, German and Swedish culture—that marks the life of the upper classes was not unusual in the Vyborg area in the mid 1910’s.
