The company of strangers

The film is my way of saying thank you to my own aging parents, and paying homage to the vitality, humour and humanity that is in elderly people. Although the elderly women in the film suffer from physical problem of old age, they’re the same people they always were. That’s what THE COMPANY OF STRANGERS is about –the young spirits inside these older bodies.In North American society, elderly people are often disempowered, ignored and without value. I wanted to see what would happen if I made a film with elderly people as the central and only reality. The cast we assembled, for the most part, were women who had been humbled by society’s bias. They felt insignificant. For seven weeks they became the center of the film’s universe, and each and every one said it was the best time of their lives”. Cynthia Scott, Director of the film.
