Bradford is a sprawling Victorian city in the north of England which was suffered, like many of its neighbours, from the decline of the old industries. It is now experience a revival, partly caused by an influx of immigrants from the Commonwealth, and the nature of the town is changing: the churches are being replaced by mosques. Since Harrison was born in the area, he has a particular affinity for it, and has the changes he sees around him to point up this arguments in the film. The film caused an outcry before transmission – and there was considerable pressure exerted on the BBC to delay the showing, but the reaction after it was seen was universality positive, both in the press and in the letters sent direct of the production office.
