Israeli director Michal Aviad was living in the U.S. when the Intifada broke out in the West Bank and Gaza. She had just become a mother for the first time. She was filled with questions about how the Occupation affected women on both sides of the conflict. So she set off on a journey through Israel and the Occupied Territories with two other women: a Palestinian Assistant Director and an Israeli Cinematographer. From the Israeli military checkpoints to the backroads of the Occupied Territories, “The Women Next Door” is the story of what happened on both sides of the camera. By incorporating the experience of the filmmakers as they meet women and journey through the difficult terrain of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the film offers a fresh perspective on both the place of women in a world defined by military power and on one of the most entrenched conflicts in the world.
