The Last Warrior
“homage to what white man calls primitive” 16:9 format, more than 3 years shooting, following a young Maasai from his time as a shepherdboy, before circumcision into his warriorhood. Based on friendship and trust, Maasai ancient rituals were filmed, such as William Lemotowan´s circumcision and his Rites of passage, his introduction into warriorhood. Homage to the so called primitive wants to be understood as a synonym for the authentic and real in dealing with Agression, Fear, Masculinity. Maasai were considered to be the most aggressive warmashine in Black-Africa, in the old days. “White men are coward”, they don´t know how to deal with their anxieties in their society. Although the time of the great warrior is over, Maasai still are children of those famous warriors in the olden days. They still hunt the lion, they still spear wild animals, they still face the deadly competitors. Growing farmland, fences, orstichfarmes, modern Kenya makes Maasai go deeper and deeper into dry Savanne land. No more buffalo-shields, no more lionhunt, that´s what Kenya law, pressured by international wildlife and Tourist organizations forbids the young Maasai to do. Go to school, get a job, modern Kenya is no more land for warriors to be. An old Maasai Lagend tells the story of their origin: Kerio-Valley. A rope was thrown, by God Enkai, elephant, cattle and all animals were sent to the earth, all for the Maasai, the “chosen ones”. A white bird came, long time ago, carrying a green leaf. It was the time of a terrible drought, Maasai were suffering from starvation. The medicineman ordered warriors to follow the white bird, since where this lovely bird came from must be water. The warriors never returned. So it is Lemotowan to search for the bird´s home, May it be Kerio Valley, the place of their origin. Fertile land, lots of water, green grass for their cattle and goats.
