This film examines one of our more “unthinkable” thoughts. What must it be like to be physically really ugly and how do you come to terms with the gulf between your external appearance and your internal needs? The film is an entertainment using disabled actors, and comedians, music, painting, film clips and “documentary” situations to examine the nature of stigma. The film also examines the way that the “documentary” convention addresses an audience in this area of current affairs and factual programming, these conventions are clearly understood and accepted by the audience. However when “documentary” films concern themselves with attitudes and employ conventional modes of presentation, the conventions themselves militate against the exploratory nature of subjects that are “attitude” based.A form of stylistic censorship often takes place because an idea does not fit into the pre-determined structure and style that the film makers have decided upon it is emasculated or jettisoned. This film attempts to demonstrate that a consistent “style” of presentation is not important.
