This is a two-part program which presents two very different hospitals –one in the Upper Volta, the other in Geneva. DYING OF POVERTY, the first part of the program, portrays the Ouagadougou Hospital in the Upper Volta, where the continual battle against disease, lack of necessary medicine and equipment, and poverty daily assault the medical doctors. Part two, RICH MAN’S MEDICINE, shows life at Geneva’s Cantonal Hospital, a modern university hospital, through the eyes of visitors from a developing country. Here, the abundance of equipment and the near obsession with cleanliness are in direct contrast to the hospital in the upper Volta and its struggle for existence.
