Celebrated film director Peter Greenaway directed his first opera, of which he also wrote the libretto. Dutch post-minimalist composer Louis Andriessen wrote the score. After the stage performances Peter Greenaway was asked to make a film version. The plot: In the opera house of a big city, a drama is being prepared to reconstruct and investigate the murder of composer Juan Manuel de Rosa. He is the sixth in a series of violent composer-deaths which started with the shooting of Anton Webern in Mittersill, Austria in 1945, and ended with the shooting of John Lennon in New York in 1980. The circumstances in which these composers died show too many similarities for them to be dismissed as mere coincidence. The question one is then compelled to ask is whether it is a conspiracy against music. Hopefully this 10-part opera project will provide an explanation. 'Rosa, The Death of a Composer' is sixth in this series.
