'Punjabi Hip Hop' portrays the quest of Aki Nawaz Qureshi, a young English musician and producer of Pakistan origin. His search for an identity and his interrogations on the music of Islam, take us along the thread of a morrored narration – to both Pakistan and Great Britain. From traditional Punjabi to British modernity, three distinct musical forms are portrayed, differing in their social origins and expressions: the Ghazal, the Qawwali and the Bhangra. What is the function of music in modern and traditional society? What is the status of the musician? At what price emancipation? How to resist the Occidental temptation of modernity? These questions offer the pretext to discover the magnificent voices of traditional musicians such as Farida Khanoum, as well as the anglo-pakistani youth´s technologically sophisticated music and its multiple variations.
